Sorry to hear about the lockdown Tony, that's gotta be tough. Hang in there man! I had a pretty good week of practice - that other guy at that other site is having one of his "hotseat" things tomorrow where you submit your recordings and he gives you a good smackdown. He's almost as bad as Phil - perhaps worse So I'm getting a very rough draft of Hotel California ready for that. Since I'm in the middle of the project I figure it would be the perfect time to get some feedback. I'm just finishing up this preliminary version, I still have to do the second harmony part and at the moment I'm embarking on the thrilling task of doing an entire take just strumming muted strings - throughout the whole song. Yup, there is such a track in the original. And then I've got to add about 5 or 6 more videos to what I've assembled already. Recording is really helpful, it makes it more obvious what parts need the most work. Well take care and have fun guys!

Jack, That other guy can actually play guitar, so his smackdowns have more value. The video project I participated in should be ready Monday or Tuesday. It was delayed because the guy doing the audio tweaking went out of town this week. The suspense is killing me because I don't know if they used anything I submitted. Maybe they'll use my video with the audio turned off. The big news this week is I changed my strings. I don't remember how long it's been. Probably close to a year. The G string had some serious wear grooves from the frets. I'm trying flat wounds again. Still working on a solo arrangement of he Jazz standard "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." I'm trying to play most of the melody in 6ths and that is causing me some problems. I'm sticking with this until I get it.

Still trying to get some coherent practice-time - right now it's difficult. I am going to try and make a half-arsed recording for the Licks tonight, though.

Hope everyone is well! I have been super busy turn in 1 apartment then had to hurry up and find another one for my son to do his intern work. However been squeezing in guitar time in between. Combo class we started on Will you be my love. I think it is Peter Green. I have the intro solo. Otherwise mostly working on the rhythm progressions for class.

Not much on the guitar front, but I did turn sixty this past week. I'm still not sure how that happened! Having to work this weekend, but thinking I'll turn in notice that I'll be retiring in a few months, then I won't have any excuses about work eating up all my geetar time!

Belated happy birthday, Bruce. I'll probably be closing the book on the ol' career soon too.
Boy, I've really smacked full speed into the proverbial wall on the BLYCU challenge. Two of these last three in the current section I just can't get up to speed. I believe I've been practicing them well, daily but not overdoing it. I seem to be asymptotically approaching about 80%-85% tempo. I'll have to figure something out for the deadline next week.
I got to switch to a new scale sequence this week. The last one required a lot of "jazz" fingering (I've also heard it called "classical" fingering)so it felt like playing that old Twister game on the fingerboard. Looking forward to a few months down the road when I'll be able to see if the effort is paying off. It would be in the realm of accuracy, stamina, and reach. Definitely not building speed demon shredder chops.

Well, I had a good week and did a recording over the weekend - a Gilmour-esq style. HAD to play this one on Anastasia, the pups on her just sounded awesome!
The t-shirt I'm wearing is a bit special. Last month was my 12th monthly challenge in 12 months (1 per month with no absence) meaning I can claim the special t-shirt. It means a lot to me and is an achievement I started a year ago but have worked toward and maintained! I've got a massive grin on my face while I play this piece.
Also, the piece means a lot to me - I think it typifies the kind of guitar player I aspire to be; I'm never gonna be fast, and I'm ok with that, but I just wanna be melodic like this track!!!

Congratulations. That's quite an achievement. Very nice playing on this tune. Playing fast is not the most important thing. Being able to play something like this is way more important.

That's some really nice playing WPB, and congrat's on the T-shirt! That sort of long-term dedication to the instrument is what really pays dividends. I agree with Phil, being able to play something like this is much more important than playing fast - you're playing the important notes, speed just adds a lot of accompaniment. But speed will come, there's probably not a guitar player alive who didn't once say "I'll never be able to play fast." Just keep chippin' away at it.
Oh and happy birthday Bruce!

Meant to respond to this before. Welcome to the 60s club, Bruce! If you can handle it financially I highly recommend retiring ASAP. I retired at 63.5 and never regretted it for a minute. We have to live a bit more frugally but we've adjusted just fine.

We have to live a bit more frugally but we've adjusted just fine. Thanks, Phil and all the other birthday well-wishers. As follow-up to this, I turned in my resignation Monday, and will be officially retired as of the end of June! I think we'll be okay financially - both my wife and I have worked, so we've got two 401K's and we'll have two Social Security checks when we reach that milestone! My wife actually retired last year, and she's been spurring me on to do the same. A bit more frugality will certainly be a fine swap for owning my own time and having all my weekends and holidays free! It's really tough now - tip-toeing around in the morning, getting ready to go to work, and trying not to wake her up...

Here's another benefit of retiring: you'll rarely ever have to set an alarm clock again.
