I'm probably wearing out my welcome here with yet another recording, but nobody else will listen to me play. My wife and neighbors just love my Behringer Guitar Link. soundcloud.com/jack_e_blue/13-bycu-more-minor-blues-4-20-14Get nit-picky. What details would you want to improve on if this were you playing? I am probably not at a level to give valuable feedback yet, but it sounds great and I can't think of anything to complain about.
Glad to see more recordings!
Cheers Joachim

Sounds great, love your tone. Thanks. I'm never happy with the tone I get. I think we all like everybody's tone accept are own. Speaking of tone - I've come to the conclusion that going directly into the computer and using modeling software will never get me as good a tone as I can get even from my cheap little Fender Mustang I amp. At least not with the interface I'm using. And I'm sure that's a big part of it. However, I'm going to continue using what I have and plugging into the computer, because that's what I have to work with, I don't want to spend anymore money right now, and it does give me an opportunity to play late at night. I'll just continue tweaking and playing around with the settings. There are many advantages to using a guitar interface, but I just don't think good tone is one of them. Of course, this may not be true with the better interfaces. Phil

Wow, Phil! If no one else will listen to you play, then keep posting here and I'll listen. Very well done. Not a thing wrong with that tone - are you looking for something different? more driven? some distortion? more sustain? if you can clarify what you're after, maybe some of us can offer suggestions. Sounds really good to me. Kind of makes me want to drop my foray into jazz blues and get back to the source...

Very nice. Great tone. You have a really nice touch with your picking hand. Major Blues, 9th Chord Blues are really good, too. keep it up.

Seriously, I think many of us are chasing that chimera of the ´perfect' tone. However, I have to say that I like just about any sound I get from my amp as opposed to what I get from modeling software. It's not a big deal, I'm just a cranky old man who likes to vent ever now and then. I do like that jazzy tone you get even from your Strat. What modeling software do you use? And do you think the hardwarel interface has a lot to do with your tone? Don't drop 'Jazzin' the Blues'!!! Everybody and their uncle is trying to sound like Stevie Ray Vaughn. What you're doing is something different and it's going to separate you from the rest of the crowd. In fact, that's what I like about this whole BYCU series - no one else is teaching these kinds of melodic, full 12 bar musical pieces. I'm committed to finishing BYCU and then 'More BYCU'. After that I'm going for Jazzin' the Blues. Stick to your guns and finish that book. You'll be a better guitarist and musician for your efforts. Of course that's just my humble opinion. Phil

Phil Thanks, Phil. I've used my Strat (which is actually a made in Mexico Powerhouse Strat with an active circuit and midrange boost) plugged into a Line 6 UX2. The Line 6 unit includes their modeling software, Pod Farm. I've also used the amp simulators in Apple's Logic Pro 9. I haven't kept notes on my settings, but will try to do so in the future. The Line 6 unit will allow me to record a dry track (at the same time as one with effects). I can then play back the dry track while applying various effects during listening, until I get something that I like. I know the last video I did ("Cool Shade") used only the Logic 9 amp simulators. I think on the previous two takes of "Old Time Blues" I used Pod Farm on the rhythm and the Apple Logic 9 amp simulators on the lead. In fact, I think on the first video I recorded both the tracks "wet" - only to realize I had more control of the final sound to record them "dry". Wow! Does that make any sense at all? I don't think the Line 6 UX2 interface really "colors" the sound at all. I think the guitar and modeling software have more to do with it. That is, if I played the Strat or my semi-hollow body SX thru the same amp simulator settings, they would not sound the same. By the way, I love the rosewood fretboard on your strat photo. In wrapping up this rambling' post, I'm not going to give up my Jazzin' the Blues project, but I might go back to some BYCU (which I never completed) or even some MBYCU (which I haven't done). Bruce : )

Bruce,
Thanks for the detailed post. I probably just need to play with the software more. I just downloaded some free modeling software called LaPou. Haven't had time to play with it yet.
I'm sure you could run Jazzin' and BYCU parallel if you have more self-discipline than I do. I'm having trouble doing BRYCU and BYCU plus a little Piedmont style finger-picking and a tiny dabbling of Jazz at the same time. I tend to get consumed by BYCU because I want to get through it and on to More BYCU. MBYCU has some very cool sounding studies that I want to try, but I'm restraining myself until I can get through BYCU with some level of competence.

Phil,
I did make it thru BRYCU. I enjoyed that one a lot, thought it gave me a good feel for twelve bar progressions and rhythm parts in lots of blues songs. I've got MBYCU, too, and actually made a CD I play in my car of those tracks (along with Jazzin' the Blues tracks). Agree, it sounds very cool, and I hope to get to it sometime. I think we've all got to fight the allure of getting too "spread out" trying to learn multiple things. I've sort of got my resolve to try to get sounding good on Jazzin' the Blues, but doesn't mean a "detour" or side trip every now and then is a bad thing... Just my 2 cents worth
