I took last week off from guitar playing, my left wrist was getting a bit sore and I figured I'd do the "smart" thing and give it some time to rest. Of course using the snow blower on Friday probably undid whatever recuperation had taken place lol, I've really got to learn to use the reverse gear on that thing instead of dragging all 220 lbs. of it backwards myself. I think I'll probably take this week off as well, it's better but definitely not 100% yet. I did a little bit of production work on our "Fade to Black" project. Also found this channel on YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/DavidBennettPiano/videos He's got a lot of very interesting stuff on there. Well hopefully you guys had a good week

Friday I played around with the looper I bought like 6 years ago, used a few times, stuck in a drawer, and eventually gave to my son. Well, the other day he was over and gave it back to me because he wasn't using it. I gave it a try and discovered that I really like it. It's so much easier than recording a backing track to play over. Of course, I never actually get around to recording backing tracks so I usually don't. Since you can add layers to a looper I can add a solo or melody and hear myself back immediately with the tap of a switch. The easier something is to use the more likely I'll be to actually use it. All I have to do is turn on the amp and tap the looper. That also means I have to turn on the amp which I haven't done in months so this is a win win situation. The amp really brings out my flaws and forces me to play with more focus and attention to detail. I don't know why I didn't use it in the past. I realize that I won't have a permanent record. However, I can hear how terrible I sound and get the bugs out before going through all the trouble of setting up for recording and doing take after time consuming take. I still need to get the hang of it. I have trouble stopping at the right time so the loop doesn't miss a beat when it loops the playback. I think I'll be using it frequently from now on. Anybody else here use a looper during practice?

Phil, I have the same experience with a looper - kept it in a drawer for years and then found out it's actually pretty cool. I just haven't taken the time to learn to use it properly.

Jack, I clicked your link. Apparently, at some point I watched a couple of his videos (red line under video). It's good to get the perspective of someone who plays another instrument.

Another week in the bag!!!
On the jazz front, I moved onto a new song out of franks fake book. this one, 'All of Me' feels easier than 'Day in the Life of a Fool'. It's presented in three chorus, first being shell chords, second I like to call "Mikey" chords and the third being jazz shenanigans. Shagging as in Mikey chords with chromatic moves, and other things that make jazz sound jazzy. I just started on the last chorus. I've also worked a little on the solo/melody.
I'm also chipping away on the Jodi Fisher book but so far it's just been working on triads and major scales. I'll admit as frustrating as it is, it's making me look at the guitar differently.
On the blues front I started BYCU Minor blues. I've not really gotten very far into it maybe 4 bars. I decided since I'm learning jazz songs maybe I should pickup a blues song too. yesterday, I dug into 'All your Love (I miss Loving)' by Otis Rush which I got out of a Play Along book I picked up a long time ago. I'm starting to get that riff under my fingers but I have a ways to go on it.
Phil loopers are a great tool but takes a a little bit to get used too. This video helped me get the hang of it.

Yeah he covers some interesting stuff, or at least stuff I didn't know about Like why there are 12 notes in Western music, and also the reason for their being natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor scales. "Turning a motif into a melody" was educational too, very much the same sort of thing John did in some of the "Jazzin' the Blues" songs. I've never had a looper by the way, always meaning to get one though

Not much to report here, went to class this week played like crap was out of time played wrong rhythms was awful.
I have 3 loopers technically, but i use the rm3 mostly for practice, it has built in metronome which I am trying to practice with Each session. But I use it also for laying a simple rhythm to practice solos, in class my instructor builds a bass line, then adds a rhythm then we work on solos ect...
The rm3 has a memory slot and you can save backing tracks on it which makes it really flexable.

Not much for me this week aside from the Challenge. My Helix has a looper built in, but I've never used it.

Damn, I swear I responded to this thread early this morning!? Now lost in cyber space. Not much doing - working BLYCU and R&BYCU. I know I had made a comment about how dead all my guitar strings are, and how it was an odd numbered year, so it must be time to change them... Also hope your wrist gets to doing better, Jack.
