OK, I finally got around to it and ended up with this crappy video. I just turned the phone on and recorded thru the phone's mic. I had planned on explaning a lot more, but I got nervous and forgot what I was going to say. Playing with all you guys watching me is nerve racking. I even forgot to mention people like Grampa, WPB, and T-Bone (who lurks from the shadows) in my shout out at the end.

Sounds good Phil, even if I don't rate a mention. That stuff looks painful to play!

Sounds good Phil, even if I don't rate a mention. That stuff looks painful to play! Sorry, man. I felt like Jack was breathing down my neck the whole time. I couldn't even play stuff I thought I had down pat.
It's more painful to listen to.

Phil, that was truly impressive man!!!! Cool with a capital K Jack, If you had kept up your bass playing for Phil he wouldn't have had to learn to do it himself and become so good!!! Next challenge, Phil is going to sing in harmony to his 3 part guitar playing. WOW!!!!

Phil that was just great! You've progressed a hell of a lot, both in your playing and your knowledge of theory. Good grief you know what notes you're playing just like Griff Hamlin or somebody I'm truly impressed. Those crazy jazz chords are hard as hell and you're zippin' through 'em like nothing while also playing bass - holy crap! Great video, your "member in good standing" has been reinstated lol

Very cool, Phil! Thanks for sharing that with us - but it does raise the serious question: what are we going to do on this board now that we can't bash you about your dearth of video output?

You guys are getting way too easy to please. I'm glad I finally did a video. I was nervous as hell talking to the camera, and it shows. This is also the first time I ever just turned on the camera and recorded in one take. It was a real eye opener. My playing is way more sloppy then I thought it was while I was recording. After listening a few more times it looks like I need to go back, slow everything down to a turtles pace, and drill this stuff. I have to pay more attention to precision and articulation. Anyway, thanks for your encouragement and kind words. I'll be recording myself more often now. Not to upload, but to assess my own playing and clean it up.

Killing it Phil, that was awesome. Like awe inspiring!!!
When you added those bass lines it really sounded like there was a bass player hiding somewhere. I was watching something maybe a B.B. King video where he was talking about how some of the blues greats who played with a back up band, didn't really need it. They could play on their own. What you just did in this video explains what he was talking about. When you were playing, it sounded like more than one instrument. Very cool!!!
You did a great job explain the key concepts. Now I'll stop stoking your ego and tell you to go practice and post more videos.

Thanks, Marc. You're embarrassing me, but I'll take all the ego stroking I can get.
In the Jazz Blues articles I posted on my blog there's a clear explanation of how to play some simple walking bass lines with those chord "stabs". Using those 3-note "shell voicings" it's not that difficult.
BTW - The blog has a new look since I upgraded to a better theme. The problems I was having with images and audio files not loading seems to be related to a Wordpress (the content management system) update. I think it's been resolved now.

This is some really nice playing, Phil. Inspiring stuff. My copy of Blues Rhythms You Can Use just arrived and this video of yours has helped motivate me to start digging in and improve my chops. Our harshest critic is often ourselves and I don’t think anyone thinks your playing was “sloppy” but you! Well done 👍

T-Bone, great to hear from you and thanks for the kind words.
Very very nice playing on that Mississippi John Hurt song and the singing wasn't bad either. Now, how about a version of "Candy Man." What was the 2nd tune you played or were you improvising? It sounded great either way.
It'll be a cold day in hell before I ever record myself singing. I won't even sing Happy Birthday at a birthday party. I only sang a couple of lines of Georgia so people would know what the song was since I was just playing chords.
