OK, this finishes off the first section (slow blues in C) of BLYCU! Lick 14 is 4 bars, covering bars 9-12 of the 12 bar progression. So this would "turn it around", ready to go into another chorus. Once again, do what you please with this one. We'll call the due date Sunday, September 13. After this one, we'll start a new section and move on to track 79 as the backing track (shuffle in A at 90 bpm). This would be a great spot for anyone else on the forum to jump in (or back in) the fray of the BLYCU challenge.

Bruce, I want to compliment you on doing this. I really appreciate it - it has jump-started the forum again, but it's also great practice-wise that we have to record something every other week.

Thanks, Joachim. I still think there's something for everyone to gain from this project. You can put as much or as little into it as your available time, skill level, etc will allow. If you just play the lick at 50% speed over a click track that's just as valid as playing it in a totally different key in all five pentatonic positions over multiple 12-bar choruses as far as I'm concerned. As an analogy, let's say our forum all went to the gym to lift weights. Now you might be able to bench press 100 pounds for two sets of 10, and Jack might be able to do 3 sets of 12 with 180 pounds. I, on the other hand, might only be able to press about 30 pounds for 3 reps (and then be unable to raise my arms for the next three days as a result of it). Even though our efforts are all very different, we hopefully all benefit from it.

Here is my recording of lick 14 - my guitar volume was probably set too low, so the recording sounds very noisy.
I reused some BB King licks from my last recording, and tried to piece it together with BLYCU in a less abrupt fashion.

Joachim, you nailed Lick 14 for sure. I also enjoyed hearing your BB licks. Your playing sounds great, but I agree about your recording - makes it a little hard to hear. I'm progressing ever so slowly with this lick.

Thanks Bruce,
I also found this lick difficult. As we talked about, it's a very hard to learn most of these licks in isolation without a metronome or backing track.

I'm still around. Haven't listened to Joachim's link yet, though. What would have immensely improved the book IMO would have been to left the metronome on during the demos. If it weren't for Bruce's efforts I would have probably never got any use out of the book.
I suppose I'll have to learn some of Bruce's time warp tricks when life returns to a more normal pace because the most useful thing for my "work flow" would be to superimpose the demo over the backing track and a click track. Trying to match GP presents some unique challenges which are well worth the effort, but sometimes it requires what feels like superhuman abilities.
I am still working on lick 14 as well as the prior set of 3, and probably putting in as much time on them as isolated phrases as before. Where the time crunch affects me is that it eats up all the time I'd be working out arrangements and recording something, as well as curbs stuff I'd be doing beyond BLYCU, which keeps my head in a better place. Hoping this weekend I'll get something up for this and the prior installment.

Grampa, that's interesting, because this project has forced me to learn some about some DAW features that I've never really used before. I definitely agree the book would be more "user friendly" if I didn't have to do all this. What would really work well with this book is the online "interactive tab" feature that Hal Leonard has (I've got a couple of their "Deluxe Guitar Play Along" series that incorporate this feature). In this, I can turn on the guitar track, the backing track, and a click track each individually. So I can play any combination of these three at the same time, while the display shows the tab. In addition, I can set a loop of any portion AND I can adjust the playback speed (from 25-100%) without affecting the pitch. Unfortunately, this book was published before they developed this feature. It is a really cool feature (this is an online feature). I wish I could demo it for you somehow.
Found a YT video that shows this feature - starts at about 0:25 in this add.

Ugh! That's all I've go to say. So this is both the current challenge and prior installment together. At first I decided to just do the "licks" standalone. But after I recorded them I decided to put them into two choruses and fill the space by dropping in some wankery. So this was patched together. It sounds a little discontinuous going into the lick 11,13,15 section, must have bumped my guitar volume doing the rest of the second chorus, which was the last thing that got tracked. I really lost my place with the rhythm in the last two bars of the 11-13-15 part. Thought about redoing it but am tired of the red light for today. The BLYCU licks beyond my technical ability as evidenced by missed/muffled notes and botching of the end. But I got something down at least. The contents are Chorus 1: -wankery -Lick 14 Chorus 2: -wankery redux -Lick 11, 13, 15 soundcloud.com/grampalerxst/blycu-11-13-15-14

Grampa, that was really nice! You had some nice major sounding runs in the wankery sections, which I really liked, which worked really well will the licks.
And you're setting a precedence of two choruses - very ambitious! We have our work cut out for us when we embarge on chapter 2.

Cool stuff, grampa. I'm going to have to beg off until tomorrow - had to work this weekend, and just didn't have time/motivation to try to record anything, nor to put up the next challenge...

It's not much of a precedent when you consider that was the 8/30 and 9/13 assignments just stuck together, and it was recorded in four chunks instead of a single take. This is the third time (could say third and fourth times) I've used that major pentatonic motif to fill space.

A day (or two) late... Here's my Lick 14 offering. Slowed the backing track down some, trying to play more cleanly.
