I had a pretty good week - of painting the house. Managed to get a little geetar playing done, working on "The Unforgiven" by Metallica. It's got a cool little classical guitar part for the intro and choruses, accompanied by a clean electric guitar playing a nice little melody (had to get a new chorus pedal for that ), then of course the crushing heavy metal part for the verse and a solo that is nicely constructed and should be manageable (maybe, possibly). I think I'll skip the challenge at the other site this month, I did a bluegrass piece last month and this month's challenge is to write a solo for a country backing track...I gotta get back to my roots.

Mostly been working the BLYCU Licks 10 & 12 challenge - now I've got to get something recorded! Jack, maybe you could post a video of you painting the house - been kind of slow around here. Or better yet, maybe a video of your paint drying...

Did another track from the other site. This one used fingers - so it was more complex for the right-hand than anything else. And, since my right-hand doesn't do much finger-picking, the tips got sore (not enough calluses yet ) This was also silent-recorded using my 2x12 beast (Blackstar ID260). Reaper added in the reverb. No other effects were used. Really please with how this one came out - I also love the tone produced by playing with my fingers.

Wasn't a great week for me. Did limp across the finish line with BLYCU challenge, and touched most of the things I'm currently working most days. In the last couple weeks I've had to replace my dryer and refrigerator, had auto issues, and just general pita issues, so it's not like I was off goofing and having fun.
Likely I'll have to scale back the time I'm putting into the BLYCU Challenge. Had to start back on OT at work, and let's just say that "keeping up" is more than a 5 min/day endeavor for me. I enjoy it, and it's beneficial, but I don't want it to be the only thing I work on. I admitted long ago that I'll never be much of a soloist, so a more well-rounded approach is important.

Wannaplay, sounding really good there! Nothing but positives to say about that!
Grampa, I think you're right about the BLYCU challenge becoming more than a 5 minute per day endeavor, and I'll accept the responsibility for that. It looks like everyone has dropped off except Joachim, you, and me. I've enjoyed it quite a bit, but have kind of let it grow to take over my practice and playing time, which was definitely NOT my original intent when I had proposed this challenge. Maybe it would help to "mix it up" more and skip around into some of the other backing tracks? or just to slow it back down to one lick every 2 or 3 weeks (which turns it into a multi-year project - which may not be bad). Of course, you DO NOT need to post an entire 12 bar chorus with every lick - just do the lick itself (I did that the first few studies, and it was definitely less of a time commitment). You can also slow the backing track in your DAW and you don't have to bring these up to full speed. Hmmm... I'll have to ponder this some. I appreciate the input, and everyone else is welcomed to chime in with thoughts as well: what could make the BLYCU challenge something you'd be interested in participating in?

Bruce, My intent when I mentioned that was limited to me modifying my own behavior in response to anticipating losing a chunk of my guitar time each week due to overtime at work. So maybe I'll drop to just the licks, or try to use lower quality versions of them in the same setting. Usually I don't spend a whole lot of time on the rest of the chorus. Haven't really thought it all the way through yet. That said, in the spirit of camaraderie I'm willing to go along with anything that will help our little group persevere. Without the accountability, BLYCU will wind up back in The Mountain of Unfinished Books.

First off WPB great playing and tone!
Jack way back in my lost memory that was one of the Metallica songs I had down! Great song.
I been working on cleaning up that jazzy tune from AM site, working on some Pink Floyd as well Good Bye Blue Sky
Did a lot of theory in class again, and need to find a new song to learn, but nothing really jumping to mind.
Also received my Boss ES8 switcher and started working on my new pedal board but I need straight connectors so progress abruptly halted ordered 2 crosby patch kits to custom make my cables.
ES8 permits you to move effects around in your chain, can use a manual mode and has recall patch functions. Honest overkill for me but its really cool.

Bruce, I am quite happy that I need to put in a bit of efforts putting 12 bars together every other week. Otherwise I'd end up just noodling around now that I am not taking lessons... Even if it's just you, me and Grampa for now, it's a great group project...

wannaplayblues Nice playing. I always found playing with your fingers sounded like it had more depth and dynamics. Cool to see you trying something different.
Guitar Center was having a daily deal on a Jackson JS34 for $250 and so i did a thing a bought it. After a few hours, the jury is still out on if it's a keeper or not.
I've been working on some bluegrass and alternate picking things this week and have been geeking out on pedals and amp tones

Wanna Play Blues, that was such a nice piece! Great playing and tone. Rich, yeah "The Unforgiven" is a big favorite of mine too, the part I like best is probably the buildup before the guitar solo, on the clean electric. Such cool licks in there. Bruce, sorry I kind of dropped out of the licks challenge, just a matter of time more than anything else. The licks in section 2 look a little more interesting to me, I'll definitely make an effort to rejoin then - promise! There are tons of backing tracks over on YouTube, I'm sure there are many that are a close match for the tracks in the book, if you're getting bored with those. Find one you like and Google "youtube to MP3" and there are various conversion programs you can use to download them.
