Have you looked at ardour? if your running Linux, it seems like a fascinating project, i've been following for a few years. Yeah, Ardour is what I was using prior to Reaper. My thoughts are based upon my experience of the differences between the two.
As I said, I can't help but feel the mix, balance and track alignment were far better in Reaper than Ardour.
There is also a tremendously good series of tutorials on using Reaper done by Kenny Gioia. His YouTube channel is Reaper Mania. On the Reaper website all of his tutorials are organized into categories and you can search for a specific topic. His explanations are very clear and easy to understand. There is a ton of useful info there. And he only uses Reaper's stock plugins for effects.

Not to change the subject but, funny story: a few months ago I was screwin' around with my computer stuff (can't even remember why anymore), I unplugged the studio monitors, the Focusrite, etc. It made a little "pop" when I unplugged the monitors, but I thought nothing of it. So I got done re-arranging everything and started listening to something - holy crap! The speakers were about 4 times louder and had stupendously exaggerated bass. So...did I fry some circuit board when I unplugged them? Was it the Focusrite, or the monitors? The speakers sounded normal when I plugged them straight into the computer via USB, so I figured they must be okay. I actually put an equalizer between the Focusrite and the monitors, I cut the bass and boosted the treble. That pretty much fixed it (sort of) but the EQ was kind of inconvenient for some reason, so I just left it with the monitors plugged straight into the computer via USB. Kind of a pain because for Reaper, I could only use headphones via the Focusrite (or change things in the settings), and for the internet stuff I could only use the speakers (unless I went into the settings). Anyhoo, today I was screwin' around with it some more (picture an old fart with reading glasses and a flashlight swearing at everything) - I replaced the Focusrite 6i6 with my old 2i4. Nope, same problem. I was actually browsing new studio monitors on the internet and then...hmmm...what's this switch on the back of the studio monitor? "Line" or "phono." It was on phono so I switched it to line. Hmmm, now it works fine. I must have accidentally flipped that switch when I was moving the monitors around months ago. I guess it always worked with the USB cable because there's no such thing as a record player with a USB output so it just bypassed that circuit. Well, I learned something today
