I had a pretty mediocre week (which is to say about average). Worked on lick 4 a fair bit, pretty much got my own 8 bars written, just need to come up with something that segues back into lick 4 at the end. Worked a little bit on that slow blues lesson from the other site - not as much as I'd have liked. Have to get on that more this week. Still screwin' around with the Ableton DAW, kind of sucks that you can't drag 'n drop an MP3 into a track, (well you can but it's all screwed up), you have to convert it to a WAV file first. Also can't figure out how to slow the tempo down without changing the pitch, something about placing warp markers at each end...I wanted to actually get some guitar playing done so I said screw it Got a Shure SM57 mic to put in front of the amp, I really like the sound I'm getting. Much lower output than the condenser mic's I'm used to, have to turn the gain up about 80-90% on the Focusrite. S'pose I could turn the amp up, but that would bother the cat

Workin' too much, playing with lick 4 - still doing some of those beginner rock solos, and some remedial BYCU.

I think I've pretty much got lick 4 under my fingers now and keeping licks 1 - 3 current, not made up anything else new to fill the rest of the 12 bars other than what I recorded previously.
I did some more work on the JTC track I was working on last week and made a "moving on" recording. Nothing fancy with the sound/tone just using the headphones out from my little Yamaha THR and into reaper.
Probably going to tackle a J McErlain Led Zep blues rhythm lesson next.

Really cool stuff Mick! Wonderful playing. That B section just screams "Do you need anybody?" Like the Beatles tune

I spent the bulk of my time working on that Charlie Parker 12-bar Blues solo that I mentioned last week.
Since it's a saxophone solo I had to figure out the most comfortable positions to play it. That alone was time consuming. I have all the notes memorized now, but there is a lot of tricky syncopation, position shifts, and pauses for as long as 5 and a half beats. It'll be a while before I can play it at full tempo.
This may be one of the most beneficial things I've done in the past couple of years - learning Blues bebop lines and phrasing, practicing reading notation, and applying a solo from another instrument to the guitar.
It's still frustrating that it takes me so long to do it, but it's worth the effort.

I found more time and energy to play again, so I had a pretty good week of practice for once. I also worked on Lick 4.
Rich, what Peter Green stuff are you working on?

Still cleaning up Black Magic Woman, but instructor wants me to start on Need Your Love So Bad. I watched that Peter Green documentary on Prime someone mentioned was excellent, then one on Fleetwood Mac which was Peter Green then the newer members.

Mick, really nice job on that.
It was a shorter week than I would have liked for guitar. Made pretty good progress on BLYCU 4. I've done run out of ideas for material to flesh out the licks into choruses. So I dug through a bunch of books and found one called Blues by the Bar that has a bunch of licks mapped to the 12-bar form. Most are probably out of my reach but there're a few that look doable so I'm going to try to work through one of those on the same two-week cycle with BLYCU. If I'm lucky some of them might work out as filler for the challenge. Still working Electric Gypsy intro. The last couple weeks have been a little stagnant on that one.

Mick, I thought that was great. Since I've been playing a lot of melodies to Jazz standards it's become apparent to me that one of the hardest things to do is play a slow melody that also has a lot of space and make it sound good. You pulled it off with flying colors.

Hi everyone again, I did a reasonable amount of work this week. Practiced the chords for the Rythym guitar on lesson 5 in MBYCU. Also kept up with practicing scales, and spent time re-learning songs for one of the bands I play in. Read stuff on building chords as well as tried to get notes above 5th fret worked.
Importantly, I got some great advice from many of you guys re knowing manuscript notation!!!

Well, the other site had its monthly challenge and I submitted a video for it. Basically, the requirement was Drop-D tuning. The rhythm guitar part was provided, but I improvised the Lead part. Took me 20 takes to come up with something I was happy to release to other people's ears. Really struggled with it and I'm still not overly happy with it. Also, it turned out more Country than I had intended - but I'm ok with that. I've already started working on a piece that I think will be the most emotional and feeling-filled piece I've done to date. It's classed as a Gospel blues, but I get a sense of Peter Green slow blues from it. I'm really please with how it sounds through my amp - just hope I can capture that faithfully on recording. We'll see this time next week Anyhow, enjoy the challenge submission... jack1982 I have a cheap Shure 57 type mic and had the same issues. Most resently I bought a condensor mic that needs phantom power - this made a huge difference and made it easier to record the amp at lower volumes for me. blackcountrymick outstanding playing!

Hey guys, thanks for all the positive feedback, I think the point of this study was to emulate a vocal line so lots of bends and vibrato was the order of the day. Definitely toughened up my callouses! I was hoping that the 12/8 feel would also in some way contribute to Bruce,s Lick challenge. WPB, I absolutely loved your monthly challenge piece, the lead part really worked over the rhythm. ...even if it did sound a little country .

I need to get back to a more ridged practice routine which has fallen by the wayside. maybe this week, or next or....Still debating signing up with active melody or truefire all access
Guitar wise this week was more creative than it was in practice.
My experiment with 13's on my hollow body are on still going strong. I found that it sounds so good played clean, almost like an acoustic. It also does not feed back as bad as it did with 10's. It's pretty tough to bend so i find my self approaching anything i play different.
I did play around with one of active melody's free lessons on jimmy Rodgers style which i found fun and challenging. I was trying to focus on some hybrid picking. I was able to get a little creative and played around with a few licks. it was a lot of fun. I also studied some triad shapes and came up with some progressions i want to revisit at some point.
I tore apart my pedal board and put it back together because i either need a bigger or 2nd board or i need to get rid of some pedals. But i want more pedals...the struggle is real.
cunningr what did you think of Peter Green: 'Man of the World'? I really enjoyed it.

Very nice, Mick and WPB!
Mick, somehow your solo made me think of "I'd rather go blind". Wonderful!

Very nice, Mick and WPB! Mick, somehow your solo made me think of "I'd rather go blind". Wonderful! Cheers J, I reckon the same . I've just picked out my next study to work from JTC and it's called "Creeping Blues", still to work out what it's based on though.
