I am listening to a lot of BB King these days, and I've become intrigued by his late guitar rhythm player, Leon Warren. He was a very accomplished player, more jazzy than BB King, and according to some BB King learned some of his jazzier licks from Leon Warren. Here's a clip from around 2000 with a jazzy solo form Warren: That guitar was later sold on auction for $1250 www.julienslive.com/view-auctions/catalog/id/49/lot/16451/LEON-WARREN-STAGE-PLAYED-GIBSON-GUITARAnd here is Warren pulling the band together when BB King breaks a string in my favorite BB King live video from '85:

B.B. definitely had a jazzy side of the blues in his playing. It's kind of humbling to think of some of these "unknown" band members. These are accomplished, very talented professional musicians. I'm happy if I can get in an hour of playing a day. These are people who have probably played maybe 6-8 hours a day for many, many years. It's no wonder they are on a whole different level in terms of skill and talent. There are a lot of these musicians out there, and being an incredibly skilled and talented musician is no guarentee of riches or stardom.

Good stuff. I keep finding more stuff to add to my list of stuff to listen too. Rhythm guitar especially in blues seems underappreciated. Thanks for shining a light on Leon.

I was watching a Sound Stage TV show on AXSTV tonight with BB King. It brought up a memory of attending one of their live performances in the 80's at a country western bar in San Jose, CA. It was a very intimate kind of gathering so I was able to strike up a conversation with Leon Warren afterwards. He kept in contact with me sending me postcards from around the world on their tours. I found your post as I just did a search on Leon. Sorry to hear he passed.

I agree with the comments by Bruce that most backing musicians receive far too little recognition, but from the interviews I've seen with BB King he seemed like a very sympathetic band leader speaking highly of his band. Best regards Joachim
