Here's my final. Not really feeling it today but I'm getting tired of playing this one and don't want to mess with it tomorrow. I didn't make the improvements over the draft version I'd hoped to make. Apologies for some of the 1/4-step bends sounding a little weird and the lurching finish. soundcloud.com/grampalerxst/blycu-4-final

Nice sound, nicely played, some very cool ideas and you followed the chords perfectly!

That was excellent, great tone too! Thanks, Rich. I've been all over the map tone-wise since we started this, still looking for something close to that "tone in my head". I think this attempt is a step in the right direction.

I really liked that Grampa! Nice sound, nicely played, some very cool ideas and you followed the chords perfectly! Thanks, Joachim. For this one with the emphasis on major tonality the ideas were hard for me to come by. I cheated a little by playing a rhythm part for a couple bars and doing a mash up of the easy parts of a couple phrases from a different book to fill in a couple other bars. Any port in a storm, as they say.

Great stuff Joachim and Grandpa! Both were full of really interesting ideas and you both put your own style on it. So much fun - and instructional - to hear all the different directions that can be taken with the same piece of music.

Man, all you guys have done some top notch stuff on the rest of the 12 bars.

OK, drug myself off the porch, recorded my attempt at a solo using Lick 4. This has been a really good exercise, even if the result produced is sort of ho-hum. The recording did sound better in Logic (but still not great) than it does on Youtube - seems like this is a common theme I have.

Sounds damn good, Bruce. I like that tone. All you guys have been getting some really good tones even though they're all different.

I agree, one of the better aspects of this is to get to hear the variety of what people come up with given the same starting point!

Man, all you guys have done some top notch stuff on the rest of the 12 bars. Thanks, Phil! Regarding the tone I'm still using the same basic template I've used for the whole challenge: whatever tone I record with plus a reamped tone blended in. I've used the same DAW file throughout, and largely the same Helix presets, just swapping amps in and out and maybe toggling a boost "pedal" on or off. For this one even though going for a cleaner sound I used a high gain amp model (Revv Generator) with the gain "knob" rolled way back (0.4 where full is 10) plus my guitar volume rolled down to about 6 to record, then added a bit of a L6 original model that's supposed to be Dumple-esque via reamp. There's a "hardness" to the tone when I'm playing that can be jarring. I'd like to soften it up just a little.

I think it sounds a little less ho-hum to the rest of us. I think we typically are not very objective listening to our own efforts. I know I have to listen to mine 4-5 times back-to-back before I don't recoil at the first sound. I even dislike the backing track when I know I'm about to come in, haha.

Here's my offering, no video this week. Well there is but it doesn't show me playing . A few flubs in there!! Good job Mick. You should get extra points for working in some of the prior licks! It's been a couple hours since I listened to it this morning, but I don't remember anything that sounded flubby.
You got me thinking--I don't know how many full choruses are an the backing track, but I've now got four "in the can" that I could probably cut and paste and fill up most of the backing track!

Cool stuff there Mick! Like the way you combined a couple of the licks together, and that chord comping at the end sounded nice too!

Wow, great work Bruce and Mick! Nice playing and ideas, and I agree with the others - killer tone!
I am so glad we are doing this - the forum hasn't been this much fun for years.

Thanks, Joachim. I agree this project has helped re-vitalize the forum. It's fun to hear how everyone takes a lick and does something different with it. You can already hear little snippets of these licks working their way into everyone's playing. I'm looking forward to moving on to the middle four bars. It's funny, I think most of us had this book just languishing on our bookshelves!
