Lick 4 with metronome:
Lick 4 with backing track:
This is another 4 bar riff, played over the first four bars of a twelve bar blues. Due date for this one will be June 7. Again, do what you'd like with it - slow it down, change the key, change the timing, just play it as it is, put it in a full chorus - whatever your available time allows. GO TEAM!

Cool Bruce, you got the demo overlaid on the backing track. Once again, thanks for putting it together.
This one sounds like it's more my "speed" (i.e., not so many 16th notes). Also sounds like another one that takes more muscularity than I can comfortably muster with the slow bend and big downward interval in the next two notes.

Just picking through this one, it looks like the most straight forward lick yet. I don't want to sound like Mr Knows It All, but that big downward interval is our good friend, the major sixth. I probably wouldn't even recognize it, but that I've been toying with the idea of buckling down and actually completing all the BYCU studies, and Blue Sixths is one of the studies I've taken a look at. Try moving both those notes to the fifth string, 13th fret and 4th fret - check it out.

I sat down with this one for a while this morning. That interval is a little tough, but I could get it with an oddball barre/finger roll hybrid. Yeah, 6ths are cool played as double-stops. I always think of Empty Arms by SRV when I hear them. Slightly awkward for me when they come melodically, but I got some time.
Looks like Phil was prescient in the weekly thread. This one has C maj pentatonic (aka Am pent) mixed with C blues scale (mostly Cm Pent, I guess). I suspect it'll be a little difficult for me to string together something for the rest of the chorus given my scant vocabulary. Fortunately I don't have to slow this one down to grok lick4, so I should have some extra time to see if I can come up with 8 more bars that don't sound out of place.

It's coming along, Rich. You've got to tell your lead guitarist to get his amp out of the closet, and set it up front, in the center of the stage! (it's too low in your mix!)

From what I can hear your playing sounds really good. See Bruce above. Can you remix it and post again?
Edit: Just realized you said it's a rough cut.

I mixed really quick with my headphones, sounded ok but I did reduce the volume a bit the louder mix sounded like i was not part of the group. Anyway appreciate the comments will remember to add a little more volume when mixing. Edit using different headphones and it is a bit lower than i thought, needed a in between lol

Since we're working out of Blues Licks You Can Use and not Mixing Tips You Can Use, I wouldn't worry about the mix too much. That's coming from the guy whose got the record or posting bad mixes here.
Sounds like it's coming along pretty good, Rich. I think it will be another nice interpretation from you once you get it smoothed over.

We're at the halfway point on Lick 4. I'm a little ahead of where I was on the prior licks, so I decided to put up a interim take. It's full of clams and timid playing. soundcloud.com/grampalerxst/blycu4First, if the guitar sounds a little weird it's because I used a tremolo effect--I was just getting weary of the way I was sounding and needed a little grease for inspiration. Sorry about that. I'm approaching this one different. The others I "composed" wandering around through my bluesy vocabulary and muscle memory and just drifted into things, but never had a 100% set intent on how it would go when I recorded them. But I don't have that vocabulary nor any instincts when it comes to emphasizing the major 3rd and related color tones in blues phrases. So I dug through books, watched Youtube, stole from the the rhythm track, to get enough bits stitched together to fill the time. I'm going to spend the week practicing this chorus more/less as-is and see if I can't learn to play it more convincingly. I guess I'm putting it up for accountability so I don't slack off this week. A little pressure to ensure I get it measurably better. This is out of my comfort zone.

Not bad, I had the same idea but univibe but couldn't get a sound that seemed cool. i think if there was a way to control the tremolo to kick in on the longer notes then roll it off on the shorter notes it would sound really good. Good job!

Well I guess this is semi-presentable Getting a haircut Thursday so make your your jokes now while you've still got the chance Hey Jack, I missed that this got posted. It's Friday so I guess I should call you dapper Jack now. I got my head bush hogged finally too. I was on track for being all set to go as Einstein for Halloween, so there was definitely an opportunity cost to getting it done. Nice job with that. There was a lick/phrase you played, I think it was over bars 9-10 that I thought was really neat, and I liked the descending double stops coming out of BLYCU4--they fit, and weren't what my ear was expecting, so a good stylistic touch. Solid job on lick 4.

Dapper Jack lol - domestic shorthair Jack Thanks so much for the kind words Grampa, I really enjoyed your rendition as well, it was genuinely bluesy and followed lick #4 beautifully. Were you switching between minor and major pentatonic? It had a lot of character to it. Looking forward to hearing what you've done with it since then. Just one tip - video didn't come in at all on my PC

Outstanding, Joachim and Jack. The two different interpretations of the rest of the 12 bars are very interesting. I think we're seeing the effect of different influences on each guitarist.
