This one is only two bars long! Works over a bar of the I chord followed by a bar of the IV, so use it in the first and second bars of a quick change blues, or use it in the fourth and fifth bars. Here it is with the metronome:
And here it is played in Guitar Pro over the backing track at BOTH bars 1 & 2, as well as at bars 4 & 5.
We'll call the "due date" May 24. Play with it, make it your own, transcribe it, change it around - or just learn to play it as it is. It's all good, and I think these have been some cool sounding riffs so far.

Thanks once again Bruce. These are really helpful.
Spent a couple minutes with this one--once again requires more muscularity than I can easily muster. A couple instances where you have to bend a note on a string then go immediately to a note on the same string but at a fret that's below the one where the bend started. I'm so used to ~not~ doing that I feel like I've somehow skipped ahead whenever I do it. And I can tell in one of the instances it has some of the same physiology/neurology involved as Grandpa's Bane (the note in the Electric Gypsy intro I've mentioned elsewhere I'm frequently muting). It will be a good challenge and may have synergy with another current focus area.

Thanks Bruce! That Guitar Pro version sounds so cool - if I took up keyboards I could just hit the pitch bend wheel and my bends might actually be in tune for once lol.

Whew, I'm struggling this time. I hope Headmaster Bruce isn't going to deduct too many points if I slink in Monday after the due date.
It took until this morning before I even had any coherent ideas for the other 10 bars. At least have a roadmap now, just need to get it flowing. Trouble is I've spent so much time hacking at the rest of the chorus that now the BLYCU part is drifting away from being a decent (for me, anyway) replica of the demo.
I just listened to the Guitar Pro for the first time a minute ago. I didn't really infer the same vibe from the demo. I agree with Jack, it's pretty cool, much smoother than I've been playing it.

I'm afraid I'm not going to have anything done this week either, I pulled a muscle in my neck and spent a few days grimacing every time I turned my head the wrong way. Broken down old decrepit codger I'm much better now but - when me move on to lick #4 I'll try to do something that includes lick #3, how's that?

Jack, just jump back in whenever you're fit...
I might just do a quick two-bar recording as tabbed; not sure I will be able to put much else together by tonight.

Sorry to hear about that Jack. Still a chance I'll get something up today or if not, tomorrow, since it's a holiday here and I'll have some extra time. Going to run through my Electric Gypsy intro routine here in a minute, then see how it goes with BLYCU3.

Well, I'd give this one maybe a C-, I stumbled over the feature lick and the "composition" is pretty uninspired. But in about 10 takes this was probably the best overall. Similar studio trickery for the guitar tone as last time although I changed it up a little. The main tone this time was a little dirtier, and the re-amped tone it's blended with a little cleaner. Decided to toss this one up so we don't lose momentum entirely. I'm not sure trying again later would produce anything better. soundcloud.com/grampalerxst/blycu3-upl

I think that's sounding pretty good, grampa. Love the tone. You did stumble a little on the lick 3. It is deceptively difficult. I had a hard time with coming off a bend and then playing a note two (or even three) frets lower on the same string. I'll try to get my "portable studio" set up and record a take, though it may not be pretty. I've tried putting together a full chorus for the past couple of days, but everything just sounds completely lame. Jack, sorry to hear about your neck. I had a "sleep injury" early this week, where I must have slept twisted around funny, and then had two days of low back spasms. I'm not sure I care for the classification, "Broken down old decrepit codger". LOL
I'll also put up the next assignment sometime later today or tonight - Lick 4. It's hard to fit this all in, as we're at the lake for the long weekend.

Okay, well here's what I've got this morning:
Lick 3 played over bars 1 & 2, then again over bars 3 & 4. Played poorly the first time, absolutely massacred the second time through. These licks are definitely a finger workout! Oops, even mislabeled the video as "Lick 4"

I struggled with exactly the movement you described, bending up, muting the bend, than grabbing a lower fret on the same string.
Nice job on yours too. I thought it was pretty neat we both borrowed from that odd-sounding fragment (odd-sounding to my ear anyway) from lick 1, albeit in different contexts/variants. I read in the text of the book where JG said it wouldn't work well over the 5th, which is right where I put it, , but it doesn't seem too distracting. You stuck it in a better spot. Like how you connected things too. For me lick 3 was just tough, and like you said deceptive.
Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention. Cool guitar!

Nice job, Bruce - and WOW Grampa!
I had to settle for just doing a rough recording, but thought it would be better than nothing.

Nicely played, Joachim. You nailed the lick! Played very cleanly. Put some nice vibrato on your bend, too. Two thumbs up from me!
Grampa, thanks for the comments. I suspect we'll all find little pieces and phrases from these licks work their way into our vocabulary - that's kind of the point if this! That guitar is an inexpensive SX model that I've relegated to the lake house, so I have something to play on when we're here!

Very rough recording here too, but better than nothing Nice, Jack! You nailed the lick pretty solidly too, along with Joachim. Cool you were able to get something down. Wish I could "play the changes" better. Interesting stuff without cliches.
