Grandpa, that was excellent! Totally professional sounding in every way, the bass and guitar were both tight as hell. Now all it needs is some vocals and a couple of guitar solos Thanks, Jack! I'm working on lyrics and some melodic overlays. My son-in-law is a competent singer, although he really likes heavily processed vocals which apparently are the convention for the metal genres where his interests lay. But I think we might could make it work. There will be at least one "guitar solo" although it will probably be something a little unconventional. Still a good bit of evolution to go.

Great sounding stuff, Gramps. The quality level is outstanding. However, the video won't play. Must be something wrong with my computer.

I uploaded the son-in-law project rough and since everyone is in a sharing mood, and we're all sort of grounded, I thought I'd share it. Definitely a WIP. He did the drums on a VST which facilitates the composition process. We have an iterative thing thing doing where we react to each other's updates. What's here is just the basic skeleton. I think it needs one more section between the chorus redux and the outro, but he likes the sudden shift. So we'll see. Some of you who have been around might remember an earlier version from many years ago that I had up after I unearthed a couple years back.
Edit to add: Insofar as it was mixed, which it basically wasn't beyond dialing in guitar tones, it was done with better-than-average headphones, which might make it more bearable, or at least closer to my intent.
Very solid, love the thick tone, definitely Rush influences!

Musta been a glitch that deleted the video data. Luckily the audio was spared. We have talked about making a tongue-in-cheek video at the end of it all.

Re the tone, two age-old studio tricks were employed. I made two recordings of the same part (same = sorta close in places, anyway), with different Helix patches, in both cases pretty gained up (different amp model). The two stems are panned hard right and hard left respectively. The second aspect is a slightly more modern twist using a Helix model that is sort of a poor man's Eventide H9 to "reamp" each guitar which adds a slightly delayed and very slightly pitch-shifted version of each track panned hard to the opposite side. I got that idea from VH aficionados who state that EVH used an H9 in a vaguely similar way at times during the 90s. It's somewhere between a chorus and tape delay effect. It also takes a lot of the "hair" off. You can buy little stomp boxes that will "double" an input signal with some pitch and timing adjustments, and overall give a similar tone, sans having two performances going on. And I didn't just hit the record button and make two live takes and call it a day. I chunked the thing up into logical parts, the odd-metered prelude, then the intro, the verse, the chorus, second verse, etc.), and got both guitars for each section "printed" before moving on to the next section. Some took as many as 7 takes to get what's there. And it's amazing how many mistakes I missed in the heat of the moment. I can play it all the way through, sort of, that's how I practice it most of the time, just get more mistakes. I went back last night and redid two of the chunks because some imperfections, once I hear them, drive me nuts. Sorry to go off the rails on the recording part--new to me and I get overly enthused.
