Way back when I promised I would post a recording so here it is. Without going into details I have been recording impaired on my computer. So this was recorded on my Boss Eband JS-8. soundcloud.com/matonanjin/texas-rock-meYour comments, suggestions, critiques are welcomed. It ain't perfect but I've spent a lot of time here. I'm gonna move on to Lesson 2.

Hey Matonanjin, I don't recognize the part leading to the V7 chord (B7). When I listen to your recording, I have the feeling the rhythm is just different from the other parts of the tune. If I recall correctly, the rhythm repeats itself through the entire tune i.e. | quarter, quarter, half | quarter followed by 6 eighths | etc Seems like you have too many notes in there. I would think the fingering for this portion is not mastered and it is breaking your rhythm. I am on lesson 2 only so I might not be the best reviewer Other than that, this sounds good to me. Thanks for having posted. Cheers Big Fb

Way to go, Matonanjin!
Sounds good. I think you kind of lost the flow somewhere around the 20 sec mark, but recovered. It does seem like you added some extra notes towards the end, but it works and doesn't sound bad at all. Your tone is good and the mix is good.
Don't you feel good now that you've done it?
Looking forward to hearing more.
Phil

It's sounds like both times through you got a little tripped up on the V7-IV7 transition but that should smooth out over time. I still revisit the E7, A7, and B7 chords from that lesson from time-to-time myself to really imprint those changes in my fingers. I didn't catch the extra notes but I trust Phil's and bigfab's ears (I wasn't listening for it). That one is harder than it seems like it should be, and I think you did pretty well with it. I'll keep my ears open for the next one!

I listened to it again. I am sure there is no extra note on the first round. However, I am not too sure for the second round. I have the feeling there is just 1. However, as the others said, it is good overall. It is gonna be smooth with time. How long did you spend on it? The E7 chord shape in Blues Rock is fun yeah

matonanjin,
Thanks for sharing. I thought it sounded pretty good - certainly good enough to move on. Very few recordings any of us post on this forum are perfect!

Initially I had a lot of trouble with the one in the turnaround (have to get on and off it very quickly), but the 7th fret one has been a more persistent headache for me, just can't always jump up to it cleanly.

Yes, the 7th fret one. Exactly my issue, jumping to it quickly and cleanly. Edited: bigtab, I started it at Thanksgiving.

Mat,
I think I've figured out what's going on at the end that was making me think you were laying an extra note or 2. There's no extra notes, however, in measure 10 after the A7 you are a half beat late on the open E and then loose another half beat somewhere in the 2nd half of measure 11, so you end up playing the final chord on beat 2 of measure 12 instead of beat 1.
I could be wrong as I'm also struggling with timing, but someone please correct me if I am.
I like the sound you're getting - a couple of questions: what is a Boss Eband JS-8? What program are you recording with? And what are you using to convert from wave to mp3?

Phil, rather than my trying to describe the JS-8 I will just send you to the Boss website and let them explain it: www.bossus.com/gear/productdetails.php?ProductId=1027I love it. I rarely use my amp anymore. I initially just bought it so that I could plug my headphones in when I practice in the morning before my wife wakes up. Then I found out how powerful this thing is. I comes with all sorts of effects. When I recorded this lesson I was using a preset called "Blues Master". It comes with a bunch of backing tracks. It will easily loop a section of a song. So, for an example, I can now take a section of the BYCU lesson 2 and just loop the first few bars and then after selecting those bars I can slow it down. What I do is "rip" the lesson from the BYCU cd and then transfer it to the JS-8 via thumb drive. You are supposed to be able to hook it directly to one's computer via a USB cable but I've never had the need to do that. I am just scratching the surface of what this thing will do. The JS-8 is no longer in the Boss product line as it has been replaced by the JS-10. Among other things the JS-10 now has 2 inputs (instead of 1) and supposedly better speakers. I don't know what else changed. As far as a recording program I am actually not using one. For this I just recorded directly into the Boss. I just got a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB interface and I am going to record with Reaper ultimately. I am having issues getting my computer to recognize the interface but that is on the back burner for a while. To convert from Wav to mp3 I am using a really old program called Cool Edit 2000. Adobe bought this software company a long time ago and I can't remember what it is now called. Audition? It was shareware when I bought it and I registered it. Of course, there is no support now but it does anything I need to do.
