Sonny Landreth isn't exactly a common household name but he is undoubtedly one of the best slide guitar player of our time.

He is an excellent slide guitarist. My wife and I went to the Peter Frampton Guitar Circus last summer. Excellent show that had BB King, Peter Frampton, of course, and others. Sonny Landreth played first. Like you said, he isn't exactly a household name. I had heard of him but really didn't know anything about him. I liked his set about as much as anyone's of the whole show. BB King was a huge disappointment but that is a whole different story. I bought his CD, "Grant Street", at the show to help support him. It is just an excellent CD and Congo Square has become my favorite of his. If you haven't watched him on Clapton's 2013 Crossroads festival, do so! He does Congo Square, among others, on it and Derek Trucks joins him. Either that or Gary Clarke, Jr.'s "When My Train Pulls In" is my favorite of that whole DVD. Coincidentally, I just picked up the newest "Guitar Player" magazine because of the cover story, "50 Badass Solos You Must Hear". Sonny Landreth's "Wind in Denver" is one of the top 50 listed listed. This is from last year's Guitar Circus. The chubby old guy is me lol

matonanjin, I last saw BB King about 4 years ago, and although he'd taken to sitting for the whole show, his playing was the fieriest I remember. Maybe it was just one of those nights, but I enjoyed it more than I did the younger King from years past.
I'd heard of Sonny Landreth, but this is the first time I've ever knowingly heard him play. Thanks for the link, GnL.

Here is another gem from Sonny, recorded backstage and up close so you can see the fingerboard really well. Notice how Sonny is adding some harmony notes behind the slide. I don't know if I've ever seen of someone do this before but it adds a lot to his overall sound.

grampalerxst, I don't want to stomp on GnLguy's thread. But just briefly, my wife and I have seen BB King probably four times. Absolutely fun, entertaining shows. His guitar playing was outstanding. Great shows.
Last year's was a huge disappointment. His band came on and played for about 20 minutes. They then helped BB on stage and he played one song. Then Peter Frampton sat in and they did "The Thrill is Gone". He then just sat and played some rhythms and talked for 10 -15 minutes. Then they helped him off stage. It is, sadly, time for him to hang up Lucille. But he is 88 years old.
I have to say the highlight of the show may have been the love that was shown him when he came on stage. The roar of the crowd, largely white, was deafening!
I now return you to your normal Sonny Landrith programming. Sorry GnLguy.
