So I spent a couple hours I could have been practicing fooling around with my recording setup, and was successful. Here's my maiden effort. It's rough, I'd been practicing this at ~50 bpm before jumping up to tempo. My pod tone is maybe over the top, but it was fun. Need to tighten up some of those quarter notes, but it's better than I woulda expected. All comments welcome, an thanks for the tips in the other thread! soundcloud.com/grampalerxst/bycu-study1-01-25-14

Way to go, grampa! I don't have any constructive criticism on this one. You nailed it. Sounds good.
I really like your tone. Are you miking your amp or going directly into your computer (or recorder) from the amp?

Thanks for the kind words.
Phil - I was playing through my Line 6 Pod and running the output via USB straight into the computer, so in a physical sense there was no speaker or mic in the chain. But, one of the things Pod (which is essentially a preamp) does is model the dynamics of amplifiers, speaker cabinets, and microphones--so the "direct" output picks up some of the tone characteristics of a mic'd amplifier. Unfortunately, I've only learned how to tap into about 1% of the thing's capability. The setting I used was a blend of two preset amp chains that I adjusted a little bit to try and reduce the muddiness. I didn't get it quite the way I wanted it, but I didn't want to spend a bunch of time fooling with it.

Grampa,
I just googled "Line 6 Pod" so now I have some idea what you're talking about and now know that I need some sort of USB interface. Disregard my post on another thread that is essentially about this same subject.
I'm a dinosaur regarding this stuff, but I still have the ability to learn. :-) Power to the grampas of the world! (I'm also a grampa.)

Grampa, I just googled "Line 6 Pod" so now I have some idea what you're talking about and now know that I need some sort of USB interface. Disregard my post on another thread that is essentially about this same subject. I'm a dinosaur regarding this stuff, but I still have the ability to learn. :-) Power to the grampas of the world! (I'm also a grampa.) Phil Grampa's rule! We seem to be conversing in 3 threads the last couple days so I'll try to touch everything here ... Glad you determined what you need. Things have changes a lot in the last 10 years I've learned. Don't know what google gave you on Line 6 POD but I have one of the "hardware" PODs (POD X3 Live) that I plug a USB cable into the back of and plug the other end into a USB port on the computer (nothing in between) then "direct to tape" so to speak via the audio software (Reaper in my case). In other words, the POD X3 has a USB audio interface built in so I don't need a standalone interface. They also make an all-software version ("POD Farm") that sounds analogous to the software you described, which would apparently take the direct output from the guitar through a USB audio interface device and do all the sound processing on the computer. So that's a long way of saying I don't know of a specific USB interface to recommend. I know several companies make them. Line 6 makes a couple but I have no idea of their quality/value. Maybe one of the other guys could recommend a make/model. You mentioned "Hard Rocker" is up next for you. I don't think I'll even get to that one this year! Probably a little on the fast side for me right now anyway. But I'll look forward to hearing your version to keep me looking ahead. I like the one that comes right after it too, Rockin' and Rollin'. Next up for me is predictably Blues Rock Tune, which if things go well should start to emerge as a full piece at tempo towards the end of next month. Still have 1 more week on study 1 to polish some of the rough spots. I probably won't consider posting any recordings of the BRYCU studies until the third or fourth one. But I do one of those each month in parallel with BYCU.

From yet another grandpa, grampalerxst, great job! and good recording.
You guys are shaming me into posting a recording. I'm finishing up this one and starting on session 2. I'll have to post one.

Grampalerxst, I guess we were talking on 3 threads about the same subject. Thanks for the explanation of your POD. I just talked my wife into getting me a looper for my birthday and ordered it the other day. Now I'll have to wait a while to get a USB interface. I think you misread something I wrote. I said, "I'm looking forward to YOU posting "Hard Rocker" very soon. " Good god, I'm nowhere near that one yet. matonanjin, Jump into the deep end of the pool and post a recording. It's therapeutic. In all seriousness, it does cause you to focus on your playing, and as a side benefit it gives you a sense of accomplishment. Phil

Nice job! I enjoy hearing other's recordings, seeing their progress. I liked the tone, also appreciate your explanation of how you got it.
I've used a Line 6 UX2 for recording, uses the Pod Farm software. This allows you to model a whole lot of different amps and effects on your computer. You can also record a dry signal simultaneously, go back and add effects , change effects, etc. to your heart's content. It's a fun toy. You can definitely get into spending way too much time playing with recording rather than practicing!

Humble thanks for the additional kind words. This renewed journey is a work in progress for me. It's helpful to have some encouragement during those first steps out of the gate.
