Not too happy with the way that slide up - slide down - pulloff lick sounds, all you can hear is the slide up part. But after quite a bit of work I can't seem to get it to sound much better so here it is soundcloud.com/jack-c8/jazzin-the-blues

"Wrong, do it again!" "Wrong, do it again!" "If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. how can you Have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?" That was very good, Jack. I'm really getting drawn in by the melodies in "Jazzin'". I'm not familiar with the tune, but I see what you mean about hearing only the slide up part. Keeping practicing. I would spend at least another month on this one before moving on. (OK guys, while Jack is distracted for a month let's see if we can catch up). Phil

Hey we don't need no dark sarcasm in the chat room LOL Yeah I'm really starting to get into the melodies and style of this stuff, it's just sort of starting to click (a tiny little bit) and I like it. That one lick is tough though, I was even trying it with my pinky because it made the pulloff at the end sound louder, but then the slide up - slide down part didn't sound as good. But if I've got to work on it for another entire month I'm sure I'll come up with something Phil your assignment for the next month is to learn this perfectly: Flat bends with be harshly penalized

Jack,
Your playing is good as always. I can hear what you mean about the aforementioned lick. Listening to the "whole thing", I think this one would sound better if you muted the drum track and just had the two guitar parts. Or does your drum machine do any brushes? That might give the drum part a more "jazzy" vibe. It's kind of funny - not only have we got to learn to play the guitar, but we've got to learn to mix, produce, edit, record, use effects, etc. I don't mean to nit pick - I think both your lead and rhythm parts sound good, but to listen to your recording a couple of times to concentrate on the individual parts, I think your drum part is what sounds off to my ear. Go back and listen to the drums on the CD (listen to the rhythm only track, where there's less going on) and compare. That's just my two cents worth.

I bet that young punk playing in the video is not using 11's. Phil

Thanks Bruce, yeah my drum machine has about 5 jazz rhythms, only one of which might be useable (too bad I don't play hip hop it's got about 75 of those ). The one I used definitely isn't a very suitable jazz rhythm, but it was about the best thing I could find. I could program my own rhythm, if I A) knew how and B) didn't suck at it . I'll eventually get a good drum program for my PC - that's the next thing on my shopping list after I get a bass. I'll try to find something a bit more suitable for future recordings and - gasp - maybe even learn how to program that thing.

Jack, That slide up = slide down lick is a bit of a challenge, but you're sounding good. I enjoyed your recording. It took a lot of practice before I thought I was getting the hang of that lick. Not sure I have the hang of it enough to record it though. Maybe that should be a goal for me. Keep up the great work. There are a lot of great melodies in the Jazzin' The Blues book.

Thanks Tommy! Yeah that one lick is tough, I should really go back and work on it some more; it's like a moral imperative to defeat those three notes now
