Hi everyone,
First, let me introduce myself. I am French (now I have an excuse if you don't understand what I am talking about ), living in the Alps. I am 37. I play the electric guitar since 2 years. I have a LP Studio and an EVH Striped serie (the red one! it is a fantastic guitar). I play on a VOX Night Train.
I love metal, rock and blues. I was practising basics during 2 years (basic chords, some basic riffs) but I did not really have a plan. Now that I can take my guitar and play some stuff without struggling too much, I feel like it's time to speed up a little bit my learning. I finally decided to learn blues during 1 year. And I will progressively continue to higher tempi, 1 year learning rock, 1 year learning metal. Not sure this is a good plan and it might change as I go but...
I started working on the BYCU book 1 month ago. And I like it a lot. I love the tunes (I listened to all of them although I am at Lesson #2). I think this is a very good book and I am pretty excited to move forward. The first 2 tunes are very pleasant to play. However, I will take my time. This is the way I usually learn, I like the feeling of mastering before moving on.
That said, here comes my question
As I said earlier, I am on lesson #2 and I would like to understand the chords change between I, IV and V ("regular" position with roots on 6th and 5th strings). I was trying to barre only down to the 5th string for IV and V, muting the 6th string. Then I realized it is (of course) easier and smoother to barre the entire fret and move only fingers 2 and 3, keeping the index on the entire fret. It is faster for me to change chords. Also, I can more easily bend my fingers so they are more vertical to the fretboard, making better sound of each note. Finally I have less problems with my skin folds muting the 4th string. Of course, I try my best not to strum the 6th string.
Does it make any sense to continue barring the entire fret? Or shall I force myself playing the other position? Or do I need to practice both? What would be your recommendations?
Many many thanks for your help and Long Live BYCU and Blues.
Cheers
